Seagate Technology today announced the streamlining of its Barracuda brand. Instead of having different Barracuda hard drives – Barracuda Green, Barracuda XT and plain Barracuda – the company will have from now on only one line – Seagate Barracuda.
The optimization of the product lines will make it easier for consumers to find the product they need and reduce costs for Seagate’s original equipment manufacturer and distribution channel customers by reducing the number of product qualifications and amount of inventory they need to manage.
At the same time the US company launched new 1GB-per-platter hard drives, featuring 7200 rpm spindle speed and larger caches. Seagate also modernized the controller, which is now built on a 40nm process and DRAM buffer, which is now up to 64MB of DDR2 memory on the new Barracuda line. The 1TB platter drives are available in 1TB, 1.5TB, 2TB and 3TB capacities. Prices range from $71.99 for the 1 TB version to $179.99 for the 3 TB version.
