The Iphone 5 details have since been unveiled. Touted to be the slimmest and sleekest mobile phone ever designed by Apple, the iPhone is just 7.6mm thick, and is made from aluminium and glass.
Form
The diligent mix of metal and glass certainly draws attention to the device design. The stylish yet functional form has been a hallmark of Apple’s devices right from its inception. This device is definitely thinner and lighter than its predecessor, and is also reportedly more powerful than iPhone 4S. The latest model also sports a nano-sim that is about 40 % smaller than the previous mini sim, and a new lightening connector, which helps shed the extra weight. iPhone 5 is longer than the 4S, however; it retains the same width.
Features
Salient features include sharp images flashing quickly across a high-resolution display screen, thanks to the iOS6. An upgraded Siri app, improved imaging capabilities attributed to the iSight camera, HD video recording at 1080p and new EarPods add to the feature list of iPhone 5.
4G networks, HSPA, HSPA+ and DC-HSDPA connectivity, and the new A6 chip offer a neat improvement in performance speeds.
Google Maps has been replaced with a proprietary map feature, which offers a better level of detail, enabling users to locate landmarks using satellite images.
The main focus of the phone is on the 4-inch display, definitely longer than that of the 4S, capable of rendering clear images in 1136 x 640-pixel resolution at 326ppi. The screen is now capable of rendering more information, with applications that were designed for the previous models of the iPhone also being supported on this device.
The new iPhone will be available in 16, 32 and 64GB versions on either CDMA or GSM models in the US. The GSM model alone will be released in Germany and the United Kingdom. The iPhone battery is said to support about 8 hours of voice-calls, 10 hours of video streaming and about 8 hours of Internet browsing on 3G networks.
Although the initial review of the new iPhone looks encouraging and the design and performance aspects as impressive as always, the features built into this model already are available on several other mobile phones that are off late offering some stiff competition to the iPhone. The newer mobile phone models from HTC and Samsung sport an array of similar, if not equivalent features. In addition, the HTC and Samsung devices are competitively priced when compared to the expensive iPhone versions. That being said, it only remains to be seen how well the new model will be received by mobile phone enthusiasts. Looking by the initial reactions, the Apple fanboys would queue outside Apple stores worldwide on September 21st. However, Android and Windows mobile users might not be very keen on getting their hands on the new version of the iPhone.
