Fans of 3D games will soon have a new toy to play with – NVIDIA plans to release the next generation GM204 Maxwell chip by the end of the year.
The upcoming chip will be very important for NVIDIA as it will retire the current GK104 processor and will be later used in a variety of NVIDIA-based video cards including the GeForce GTX 880 Ti, GeForce GTX 880, GTX 870 and GTX 860. These cards will also enjoy 16 nm production process although at first they will be produced with older 28 nm technology. Thus the GTX 880 with a 28 nm GM204A GPU will be presented in October, while the 16 nm GM204B chip will come out in Q1 2015. The new cards based on GM204 are expected to retail for USD 250-500.
The GM204 GPU is expected to feature 3200 CUDA cores, 200 TMUs and 32 ROP units. The reference model will offer 4 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 256-bit memory bus, a GPU running at 900 MHz (950 MHz in Turbo Mode) and memory operating at 7400 MHz.
