The last few years haven’t been that great for AMD in the CPU department where FX chips repeatedly yield to faster chips by Intel but not all hope is lost. As we reported earlier AMD works on a new and much faster CPU architecture that will debut in 2016. The architecture is dubbed K12 and will have two processors based on it – an ARM version and a x86 model but up until now it hasn’t had an official codename. Well, here it is – the new chip architecture is codenamed Zen.
This new information comes from the AMD CEO Rory Read who unveiled it at a tech conference, sponsored by Deutsche Bank. According to Mr. Read the FX architecture will be on the market for one more year because the new AMD design will not be ready before 2016. He also said that they knew the FX module structure would not shatter benchmark records but things are going well for AMD now ever since Jim Keller joined the company. He is widely regarded as a chip guru so there’s a serious chance AMD will have a strong competitor in a little more than a year.
In addition to that AMD said it would have a new manufacturing process by the time Zen comes to market and this is good news too. Unfortunately there’s no more information on Zen and the tech process the new chip will come with.
