New silicon strips may bring super fast computers

Don’t you like it when you are surfing the web and you come across a piece of news that describes a new technology that promises to make your life much easier and much better? Imagine a time when you will have unlimited free energy, super fast computers, ultra fast ways to travel and more. It feels good, doesn’t it?

This is exactly how we felt when we discovered a new invention by scientists who work for Stanford University in the United States. Apparently they have created a new optical link that uses silicon strips to bend light at right angles, which future processors will likely need to transfer data at super fast speeds. The key to this capability lies in series of gaps. When light interacts with the device, the combination of silicon and these gaps sends different wavelengths left and right. What’s even better is that you are not limited to specific light bands or directions and you can even use an algorithm to design the link you need in a matter of minutes.

The technology has been created with thought of the present and that’s why it is compatible with existing fiber optic networks and can theoretically improve transfers on high-capacity data lines such as Internet backbones in ways that are not possible with conventional optics. But the ultimate goal is different – the Stanford scientists hope they will be able to create photonic computer chips that will replace the electrical connections found in modern PCs with much, much faster light-based pathways. If this happens then say Hello to incredibly fast, yet incredibly power efficient computers!

Let’s wish the Stanford researchers success and hope to see these computers in action in the not so distant future. This is really exciting news, don’t you think?
