The NVIDIA Maxwell architecture has been around for months but so far the US GPU maker NVIDIA has released high-end Maxwell models only – the GeForce GTX 970 and GTX 980. If you don’t want to spend that much on a Maxwell card then wait a little – the first mid-range Maxwell 3D card will come out during CES 2015 which takes place in early January 2015. As expected this will be the GeForce GTX 960.
The preliminary specs of the GTX 960 state the card will use the GM206 GPU, which happens to be a simpler and cheaper version of the high-end GM204 graphics processing unit. Thus the card will get 10 SMM units with 1280 CUDA cores and 2 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 128-bit memory bus but a version with 3 GB of GDDR5 memory with a 192-bit memory bus is also planned. There’s no information on the pricing of the card as of now. Given the specs list the GeForce GTX 960 should be as fast as the already released GeForce GTX 770. The card is expected to cost around USD 250-300.
We’ll have to wait until January 2015 to get the rest of the specs so stay tuned to our web site for more information.
