Every once in a while there’s a major Android release that changes things considerably when it comes to smartphone features and functionality. The latest version, which happens to be Android 5.0 Lollipop, is one such release as it brings a number of important updates and new functions. But despite the fact that Lollipop has been around for just a few weeks and still hasn’t reached most Lollipop-capable devices, there are rumors of a major upcoming Android 5.0 update that will come out as early as February 2015.
The new Android version will be called Android 5.1 and will address various bugs found in Android 5.0 Lollipop as well as add a number of new features and improvements. The update is said to bring general improvements in system stability, better RAM management, fixes for excessive use of network devices when using Wi-Fi and wireless connections, a silent mode option, sudden force close fix, better battery management, changes to the Material Design color palette and fixes for some Android 5.0 bugs that are related to problems with sound, notifications and more. In addition to that Android 5.1 will add a few new functions but there’s no information on what they can be.
All this is interesting information but given that most smartphone makers have not released Android 5.0 Lollipop for their devices just yet, the adoption of Android 5.1 may be even slower than that of Android 5.0. In any case if the new update gets released in February 2015 we do not expect to see Android 5.1 around before summer 2015. But then again, who knows – so far we have seen Android 5.0.1 and Android 5.0.2 updates around, which means Google is working hard on its mobile OS.
