A few days ago NVIDIA unveiled the GeForce GTX Titan X – a new flagship video card that comes with full 12 GB of GDDR5 memory on board. The card is powered by the GM200 GPU, which features the Maxwell architecture in all its glory. The GM200 will soon power another card, or so rumors say – the card will be called GeForce GTX 980 Ti and is scheduled for fall 2015.
This news should not surprise you that much as it will be the same story which we saw with the GTX 780 and then the GTX 780 Ti. If the rumors are true the GTX 980 Ti will have the same 3072 CUDA cores, courtesy of the GM200 chip, but will feature just 6 GB of GDDR5 memory. To make things a bit sweeter, NVIDIA will increase the clock speeds of the card, though – thus the GTX 980 Ti is expected to run at 1100 MHz (1200 MHz Turbo) for the GPU; the memory speed is unknown. The GTX 980 Ti will also cost less than what the GTX Titan X goes for these days, which is USD 999, but there’s no preliminary pricing information on the GTX 980 Ti.
There’s a slight chance that the GeForce GTX 980 Ti may come out earlier than fall 2015 but this depends on AMD and its upcoming Radeon R9 390X with HBM memory. No matter how you look at it, though, we are in for a new round of fighting for the 3D graphics performance crown and this is never a bad thing.
