You may not feel it yet but the transition from DDR3 SDRAM to DDR4 SDRAM has already begun. The easiest way to see the change is to look at EVGA – the company has announced several new DDR3 and DDR4 memory kits that will serve all market segments.
The new EVGA DDR4 memory modules run at 2667 MHz and 2800 MHz and are available as quad-channeled memory kits with latencies of 16-16-16-36 at 1.2V. The situation with the more popular DDR3 memory is different – there are eight kits to choose from that offer either 8 GB or 16 GB of memory, depending on the kit. Speed-wise the DDR3 memory runs at 1600 MHz, 1866 MHz, 2133 MHz or 2400 MHz and requires 1.5-1.65V, depending on the model. The slower DDR3-1600 memory runs at 9-9-9-24 latencies, while the DDR3-2400 runs at 11-13-13-31 latencies. You can see more details in the attached picture.
The DDR3 memory kits are available for USD 59-129, while the DDR4-2667 and the DDR4-2800 kits sell for USD 189 and USD 199, respectively. All kits come with a 3-year warranty too.
