AMD’s Fiji evolution has had a rather interesting path – a few months ago we all thought that the Fiji silicon would cover the entire Radeon 300 series video cards, then later we found out that Fiji would be limited to high-end models only. Unfortunately the bad news continues – AMD’s Fiji graphics card will likely have one representative only.
AMD now faces several problems that sit in front of the successful launch of Fiji. First a few days ago NVIDIA launched the very powerful GeForce GTX 980 Ti at the relatively low price of USD 649, which makes releasing a more expensive video card with the same or lower performance a meaningless task. Then AMD faces Fiji GPU production delays and problems, which have made the company cancel the potential launch of more affordable Fiji graphics cards. Given these circumstances AMD believes it would be better to have a single high-end Fiji card that will bring more money to the company. So what we will likely get at the end of June is a single Fiji graphics card that may be called Radeon R9 Fury X and this will be it for now.
The upcoming Fiji graphics card will have two extra power connectors and a small-sized PCB thanks to the implemented HBM memory. The card should appear by the end of June.
P.S. The latest rumors suggest the Radeon R9 Fury X will be slower than the GTX 980 Ti, which is almost as fast as the GeForce GTX Titan X. If this is so then the tough times for AMD will continue.
