The GeForce GTX 980M video card is one of the fastest mobile video cards money can buy today but NVIDIA thinks the GPU is not as fast as it should be. That’s why the US company is working on the GeForce GTX 990M video chip, which we discussed some time ago.
But how fast will the GTX 990M be? A new online rumor claims that the GTX 990M will be the mobile version of the GTX 980. The upcoming mobile video card will have 128 texture units, 64 raster operation units and 2048 CUDA cores that will run at 1190 MHz but it is unclear whether this is the default clock speed or Boost clock speed. The memory of the GTX 990M will be much slower than the one seen in GTX 980 – the mobile video card will have access to memory that runs at 5000 MHz over a 256-bit memory bus, whereas the memory of the GTX 980 runs at 7000 MHz. This will make the GTX 990M somewhat slower but this is the price to pay for being mobile. The new NVIDIA chip will also have TDP of 135 watts, so notebook makers which plan to use the GTX 990M will have to think of serious cooling solutions.
The GTX 990M will be used only in premium gaming notebooks. The chip is expected to arrive before the end of year 2015.
