AMD focuses on energy efficiency in next-gen GPUs

The year 2016 will be big for AMD – the company will launch its first 14 nm FinFET products and will try to be a big CPU player like years ago with its new Zen processors. But apart from this AMD will also launch a new generation of GPUs that should make the company the leader on the 3D market and that should also bring much needed cash.

The new GPUs will come with a twist, though – a source close to AMD claims that apart from performance the company will also focus on energy efficiency so the new Arctic Islands generation will be much more power efficient than anything AMD has had so far. One of the reasons for this will be the brand new 14 nm FinFET process used but there will be some power consumption optimizations as well.

In addition to this a new code name has surfaced as well – we know that Arctic Islands will be based on GPUs codenamed Greenland, Ellesmere and Baffin but possibly a new GPU has showed up, codenamed Vega10. There’s very little information on this new code name but Vega10 will likely be a derivative of the Greenland flagship GPU or an even better GPU. We will know more later but do not expect any Arctic Islands GPUs soon – they are scheduled for 2016.
