Intel has unveiled eight new Broadwell and Skylake processors during the Christmas holidays. The new chips have unusual model numbers and include two Celeron processors (Celeron 3855U and Celeron 3955U), one Core i3 chip (Core i3-6098P), three Core i5 processors (Core i5-6402P, Core i5-5200DU and Core i5-6198DU) and two Core i7 processors (Core i7-5500DU and Core i7-6498DU). The first digit in the numbers still shows the generation so as you can see we have four new Broadwell chips and four new Skylake processors.
There are two new desktop models among the eight new chips and these are the Core i3-6098P and Core i5-6402P processors. The suffix “P” means that these Skylake processors lack integrated graphics inside, so if you stumble across one of them, getting a discrete graphics card is mandatory. The Core i3-6098P processor has two physical cores with Hyper-Threading technology at 3.60 GHz and sells for USD 117, which is the same price that the Core i3-6100 goes for. The Core i5-6402P is a quad-core processor with 6 MB of L3 cache. This one runs at 2.80 GHz or 100 MHz faster than the Core i5-6400. The i5-6402P sells for USD 182. All the remaining chips are mobile as you can see from the “U” suffix but unfortunately there’s no information what “D” stands for. Most probably this is a new feature that we haven’t heard of before. As to the Celeron chips – they pack two cores at 1.60 GHz (Celeron 3855U) and 2.00 GHz (Celeron 3955U), 2 MB of L3 cache and Intel HD 510 GPUs but lack Hyper-Threading. Strangely enough they sell for the same end price – USD 107 – which makes us wonder why the Celeron 3855U exists in the first place.
The new chips will be in new notebooks and desktop computers very soon.
