Crucial has announced a new and unusual product that targets businesses across the world. The acclaimed US memory maker has presented new Nonvolatile DIMM (NVDIMM) memory for servers that will help companies avoid long backup and restore times in cases of power loss, hard drive failures and other similar and unfortunate events.
The new NVDIMM memory by Crucial combines DRAM and NAND technologies onto a single module thus providing the performance of DRAM memory with the endurance of NAND. In the event of a power loss, the NVDIMM will back up all DRAM data to the NAND while utilizing a backup power source, known as an ultracapacitor. The DRAM on the NVDIMM ensures critical data can be operated on from a low-latency memory space without the risk of losing it. The NAND on the module ensures that the contents of the DRAM are not lost during a power failure, making the DRAM persistent. When power is restored to the system, the data in the NAND is restored on the DRAM. During normal operation, NVDIMMs perform identically to RDIMMs, and servers recognize them as such. Critical data such as transaction logs, meta-data, and database logs are written at the speed of DRAM, which for current NVDIMMs is at 2133 MT/s.
“NVDIMM is a persistent memory solution for companies who have valuable data they need to protect in case of a power outage,” said Michael Moreland, worldwide product manager, Crucial. “Combining DRAM and NAND, Crucial NVDIMMs safeguard data during power loss, remove I/O bottlenecks that hold servers back, and increase the performance of server applications.”
The new NVDIMM memory by Crucial is now available at select Crucial partners across the globe. All Crucial memory is backed by a limited lifetime warranty but there’s no information how much this Crucial NVDIMM memory costs.
