A few months ago we reported on an upcoming new SSD family by Samsung. Called 850 Evo the new line was to bring more performance and all the latest SSD technologies in one package. Back then the line was to be released by the end of 2014 but this apparently will not happen. Instead expect the line in early 2015, possibly at CES 2015, which is in early January 2015. In addition there was little information on the SSD line and we couldn’t tell you much on the upcoming solid-state drives.
This time we have more information likely due to the near launch date. The new SSD line will have an all-new in-house memory controller, which is yet unannounced and five models with capacities of 120 GB, 250 GB, 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB. The drives will arrive in metallic chassis that will offer the popular 2.5-inch form factor and will be just 7 mm thick. The Evo 850 will also support SATA 3.0. Given the nature of the ads we have seen so far the drives will also feature world’s first 3bit 3D V-NAND memory, which will lead to higher memory density and higher capacities with no loss in performance.
There is no information on the SSD line speed as of now but we will report again on this new and interesting product line when it comes out in a few weeks.
