The Japanese company Showa Denko (SDK), which designs magnetic hard drive platters, has announced the first 2.5-inch hard drive platters with a capacity of 750 GB. The platters will ship in March of this year.
The new platters feature 8th generation perpendicular recording technology and this allows them to offer this record-high capacity. Notebooks with these platters are expected by the end of the year, which means you will be soon able to purchase a notebook with a 1.5 TB hard drive.
The company also plans to design and create 2.5-inch platters with 1 TB of capacity this year, which will allow mobile devices such as notebooks to offer 2 TB or even 3 TB mobile hard drives. The first notebooks with such hard drives should be on the market in 2016.
