Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a worldwide leader in digital consumer electronics and information technology, announced today its new premium Spinpoint MP2, a 250GB 2.5” hard drive that carries 125GB per disk. The small 2.5” form factor makes it ideal for mobile applications such as notebook PCs as well as conventional desktop PCs.
“As the capacity, performance, and stability features are comparable with 3.5” hard drives, Samsung’s 2.5” drive offers our customers a smaller form factor with all the advantages of a 3.5” drive,” said Andy Higginbotham, director of hard drive sales and marketing, Samsung Semiconductor.
The Spinpoint MP2 features 7200rpm speed rotation, SATA II 3.0 Gbps interface and Native Command Queuing functions for advanced performance. The MP2 is designed for entry-level enterprise applications with high performance requirements such as workstations and RAID or blade servers.
Samsung’s Spinpoint MP2 hard drive greatly expands the storage capacity of mobile products, in step with the surging growth of multimedia content and the rapidly changing mobile environment. It has been developed to meet the stringent environmental demands of notebook PC and portable consumer electronics, where the keys to success lie in minimizing noise, susceptibility to vibration and power consumption.
Samsung’s proprietary SilentSeek™ and NoiseGuard™ technologies are incorporated in the drive to offer ultra quiet operation. An optional free fall sensor is also available for data protection in case of any unexpected external impact. The Spinpoint MP2 drive has a 16MB buffer memory and is available in 80GB to 250GB capacities.
Market research firm IDC forecasts that 2.5” hard drives will reach 203 million units in 2008, which is an annual 20 percent increase. Initial shipments will be started to key OEM customer from March 2008.
